We are a mainly gi based BJJ club, so for general training you will need a BJJ gi. But, we don't expect brand new students to fork out for a gi until they've trialled our classes and decide they want to become a member.
(BJJ gi = Jiujitsu uniform)
So starting out, a t-shirt/rashguard and shorts/leggings will do fine. AKA "nogi" gear.
Once you've decided that we're right for you, we can advise on where to buy a good value gi.
We do expect that frequent 5 class pass holders and drop-ins bring a gi to wear, along with nogi gear.
We're pretty laid back, but we do have some rules and guidelines we expect people to follow:
1. Keep it clean. We expect people to show up in clean training gear, with finger and toenails clean &trimmed.
2. Respect the tap. During training, if your partner taps, you stop. No exceptions.
A tap can be physical, tapping your training partner or the mat 3x or verbal, eg saying "tap, yes, stop" .
If you cannot follow this rule you may be asked to leave and your membership cancelled.
3. No shoes on the mat, no bare feet off the mat.
4. Bullying or harassment of any kind will not be tolerated, on or off the mat.
5. We are a politics and religion free zone, we're just about the jits.
6. Its okay to refer to the instructor by their first name, but if that feels weird, "coach" is fine.
Our classes will generally consist of a brief warmup, solo and partner drills, techniques and either positional or live sparring(rolling).
People new to BJJ are not expected to roll live straight out of the gate, this isn't fight club guys.
In a word, no. While being fit is beneficial in all aspects of life, it is not a pre-requisite for entry to bjj.
Getting fit will happen as a by product of your training.
